Fragrance comes in four concentrations. The standard concentrations are Eau fraiche (EDF), Eau de cologne (EDC), Eau de toilette (EDT), and Eau de parfum (EDP). Each of these fragrances consists of different amounts of essential oils. Fragrances with higher concentrations have more essential oils, making them last longer and smell stronger. In general, EDF has the least amount of essential oils and EDP has the most.

Overview of each concentration type

Splash & Aftershave

Aftershave and splash serve the same purpose – to refresh your skin after a shave. Splash is an alcohol-based liquid that you splash on your face after shaving. Aftershave is usually a lotion or balm consisting of applied to the shaved area afterwards. Splash tends to sting more because it contains more alcohol, so if you have especially sensitive skin, it might be better to choose the option with less of this ingredient. Aftershave can also provide moisture and nourishment to freshly shaven skin; some will even contain SPF protection for added benefits. It’s important that whichever you choose be tailored to your skin type. Generally speaking, ointments are best for dry skin, light lotions for normal/combination types, and gels for oily skin.

Eau de Senteur

Eau de Senteur is a type of fragrance water that has become increasingly popular due to its light, airy scent and long-lasting qualities. It is often made with natural or artificial scents, combined with oil or( NO alcohol,) to produce subtle notes of aroma. Unlike many commercial perfumes which have an intense and overpowering odor, Eau de Senteur has a delicate fragrance that lingers. It feels comfortable while still leaving an impression. Whether you like something light and sweet or something more exotic, Eau de Senteur comes in a variety of fragrances to suit your personality and preference. Also, for those who are looking for a more affordable option, Eau de Senteur can be the better way to go. It tends to take longer before needing a refresh than more expensive alternatives.

Eau Fraiche (EDF):

This has a concentration of less than 5% essential oils, so it lasts up to two hours after applying. This is usually used as a body spray or light scent for everyday use. Eau Fraîche is a type of perfume that typically has a light, fresher scent than classic fragrances. This smaller concentration creates an informal, less intense or ‘lighter’ aroma than colognes and EDTs, which tend to have higher concentrations and longer lasting effects. Additionally, Eau Fraîche usually contains more natural ingredients and fewer chemicals which allows its smells to feel more delicate and refreshing. In comparison to other concentrations of perfumes, the scent of an Eau Fraîche is hard to identify when applied directly to the skin but will leave a subtle trail when worn throughout the day.

Eau De Cologne (EDC):

Contains between 5-10% essential oils, making it last from two to four hours after application. It has a light scent that makes it perfect for summer months or casual wear. Eau de Cologne is a type of perfume originating from Germany. It has a refreshing and light scent that makes it ideal for daytime or office wear. Made with top, middle, and base notes, the scent generally consists of citrusy, floral and herbal accords come in waves throughout the day. Adding its own distinct personality, Eau de Cologne caters even to those who are sensitive to strong smells. The scent often dissipates quickly on clothing or skin leaving one feeling energized yet relaxed at the same time. To make sure you get the full benefit of this delightful fragrance, pay attention to the expiration dates. Sometimes aging can cause evaporation which might otherwise reduce its effectiveness.

Eau De Toilette (EDT):

EDT contains 10-15% of essential oils and lasts up to six hours after application. This type of fragrance is great for those who want something between EDC and EDP in terms of strength and longevity. Because it contains a small percentage of oil, the smell of Eau de Toilette doesn’t linger for too long and often needs to be re-applied after a few hours. EDT usually consists of alcohol, water, and fragrant oils but can also contain other ingredients to improve the texture or feel on your skin. Many popular perfumes on the market today are produced in an Eau de Toilette concentrate. This allows for more complex smells that can be produced in smaller amounts. It is also relatively inexpensive when comparing it to its Eau De Parfum counterpart, so you get a great value for your money.

Eau De Parfum (EDP):

Typically, EDP contains 15-20% concentration of essential oils which gives the scent a longer-lasting linger. The notes in an EDP travels closer to skin contact and become stronger as it gradually settles into the skin’s chemistry. Due to its strong blend, it can last up to 8 hours after initial application. While more expensive than EDT, EDP offers excellent value as a little goes along way and should typically be re-applied once or twice each day.

Extrait de Parfum

Extrait de Parfum, sometimes referred to as pure perfume or simply just parfum, has the highest concentration of essential oil available in any perfumed product. Typically it contains between 35-45% of potent essential oils which results in an intense scent that lingers on the skin. Due to its strength and complexity, it is a favorite among many loyal customers and Parfumiers alike who appreciate its depth of scent and endurance throughout the day. Unsurprisingly Extrait de Parfum is also the most expensive sounding product due to its higher concentration. However, a little goes a long way. Each application will last part of the day, so when comparing it to other lesser concentrations, you may actually be getting better value for money with Extrait de Parfum in the long run.

Longevity of Fragrances

When shopping for fragrance, understanding the different types of scent concentrations is essential. Let’s start with the most common ones—Eau de Toilette (EDT) and Eau de Parfum (EDP). EDTs are lighter and more affordable than EDPs, making them great for everyday wear. They usually last around 4-5 hours on average. On the other hand, EDPs have a richer scent and tend to stay on your skin longer—up to 6-8 hours—making them great for special occasions or if you want a signature scent that will last all day.

Next up is Parfum (or Perfume). This type of fragrance has the highest concentration of oils out of all the other types. It has a stronger scent that lasts anywhere from 8-12 hours on average. It also tends to be more expensive than EDT or EDP due to its high oil content. Lastly, there is Extrait de Parfum (or Extrait), which is even more expensive than Parfum because it has an even higher oil concentration. Thus delivers a powerful punch of scent that can last up to 12+ hours!

Comparing Fragrance Concentrations

Eau de Toilette vs. Eau de Parfum

Both Eau de Toilette (EDT) and Eau de Parfum (EDP) contain a higher percentage of alcohol than other types of perfume, and they both come in lighter scents that aren’t too overpowering or intense. EDT is usually less expensive than EDP, so it can be a good option if you are looking for a fragrance that won’t break the bank. However, if you want something a bit more long-lasting and luxurious, then EDP might be the right choice for you.

Parfum vs. Extrait de Parfum

If you love strong fragrances, then Parfum and Extrait de Parfum are definitely worth considering. These concentrations have a higher amount of essential oils and fragrance compounds than EDT or EDP and will last longer on your skin as well. They are usually more expensive but worth the extra cost if intense fragrances are your thing!

Choosing the right fragrance concentration is about finding something that meets your needs and expectations—and at the same time makes you feel desirable and splendid. Whether it’s EDT or EDP for everyday use, or Parfum or Extrait de Parfum for grand occasions, there is something out there that will fit every budget and lifestyle. Now that you know all about these different types of fragrance concentrations, all that’s left to do is find the perfect scent! Good luck!
